A SMARTER APPROACH TO MARINE WEATHER MEASUREMENT

What Does It Take to Measure Weather Reliably at Sea?

Marine and offshore environments put unique pressure on weather instrumentation. Salt spray, corrosion, difficult access, and limited maintenance windows can all affect system reliability and data continuity.

Maintenance at Sea Can Cost More Than the Sensor

A small service issue can become a major operation when equipment is offshore. When evaluating a marine weather system, consider:

  • Can key components be serviced in the field?
  • Does the entire instrument need to be removed for maintenance?
  • How much downtime will service create?
  • Can technicians restore the system in a single visit?
  • What’s the cost of traveling to the site for maintenance?

Installation and Maintenance Tips for Harsh Marine Environments

By doing these things, you could greatly improve data integrity while cutting down cost of ownership:

  • Choose mounting locations that minimize turbulence and interference.
  • Use marine-appropriate hardware, connectors, and materials.
  • Protect cables and connection points from moisture and movement.
  • Plan service access before the system is deployed.
  • Inspect regularly for salt buildup, corrosion, loose hardware, and wear.
  • Consider long-term maintenance needs, not just initial installation.

BUILT TO SOLVE A REAL MARINE CHALLENGE

The ResponseONE™-Pro was developed as a solution to a challenge faced by the National Data Buoy Center. They needed an all-in-one weather station, but they also needed the field serviceability they were accustomed to with traditional Wind Monitors. In harsh marine environments, salt spray and routine maintenance could otherwise mean removing and returning an entire instrument for service, which leads to costly shipping and downtime. They needed a better solution.

Benefits of ResponseONE™-Pro

  • Field-Serviceable Design: Replace the sensor stick on site instead of returning the entire instrument.
  • Reduced Downtime: Keep the station in service and minimize gaps in the data record.
  • All-in-One Measurement: Wind, temperature, humidity, and pressure in one compact instrument.
  • Built for Harsh Marine Environments: Designed for salt spray, corrosion, and demanding offshore conditions.
  • Simplified Integration: Fewer instruments and fewer cable runs simplify installation and maintenance.

Our Marine Sensor Options

Marine Sensors for Every Ocean. Every Continent. Every Day.

ResponseONE™-PRO Weather Transmitter

The ResponseONE™-Pro Weather Transmitter measures four key meteorological variables with one compact instrument and a replaceable sensor stick.

Ultrasonic Anemometer - Marine

This ultrasonic sensor offers high performance and low power consumption in a compact size.

Marine Wind Monitor

The Wind Monitor-MA is an accurate and reliable wind sensor specifically designed for the rigors of the marine environment.

Precipitation Gauge

The Precipitation Gauge accurately measures rain or snow precipitation without moving parts. Insulated housings and thermostatically controlled heaters permit operation at temperatures below freezing.

Marine Wind Tracker

A compact wind speed and direction display with advanced features such as relative wind angle and NMEA serial I/O making it suitable for shipboard use.

Meteorological Translator

A programmable digital display and data logger compatible with a wide variety of sensors and accessory devices that will accommodate the majority of meteorological needs.

Barometric Pressure Sensor

Barometric pressure sensors combine high accuracy and low power consumption over a wide range of pressures and temperatures. The compact size allows for easy installation.

Pressure Port

Pressure Port provides an effective static pressure inlet for a barometric pressure sensor to significantly reduce errors due to wind and create a barrier to water and snow.

Temperature & Relative Humidity Sensors

We offer standalone temperature probes in addition to a combo probe that combines a high accuracy, capacitance type humidity sensor and precision Platinum RTD temperature sensor into one.

Multi-Plate Radiation Shield

The Multi-Plate Radiation Shield protects temperature and relative humidity sensors from error-producing solar radiation and precipitation. Compact size and light weight make this shield useful for many applications.

Electronic Compass & Serial Interface

The compass utilizes a solid state compass module for accurate magnetic heading data and is ideal for mobile and portable applications. The serial interface is also available without the compass circuitry.

Sentry™ Visibility Sensor

The YOUNG Sentry™ Visibility Sensor measures atmospheric visibility (meteorological optical range) by determining the amount of light scattered by particles in the air (smoke, dust, haze, fog, rain, & snow).
